Our Vineyards

Vineyards

Suvereto‘s culture revolves around agriculture. The land has been shaped by the work of generations of farmers who have planted vineyards and olive groves over the centuries, drawing on the hillsides a rare mosaic of fields, woods and pastures.
Today, wine is the leading product in Suvereto. The terroir of Suvereto wine is a kaleidoscope of climatic micro-zones, each with peculiarities and precious excellences.
A thousand-year history nourishes our vineyards, which develop among woods and ditches, cultivated fields and wild pastures. A territory that man has been able to shape by finding a complex balance between the reasons of nature and the needs of agriculture.
We have chosen an extreme and uncontaminated place, uncultivated for decades, with a strong presence of stones, immersed in the Mediterranean maquis.
The proximity of the sea, the alternation of the hills and plains of the Cornia and Milia, the constant breezes, create a complex balance that makes the places, the people and the products of the land, straightforward, strong and unforgettable: like our wines.
The presence of a forest separating the Petit Verdot vines from the Sangiovese and Pugnitello vines is an asset for our company. It guarantees the wildlife an oasis and favours the permanence of a balance that has been produced over centuries.
Finally, the addition of biodynamic techniques creates an even closer bond with the times and language of nature.

The vineyards at Notri

Our project began in the winter of 2012, when we identified a two-hectare vineyard planted in the early 1980s in Notri di Suvereto.

Our choice was made with the awareness that this very territory, thanks to the presence of the Metalliferous Hills and the proximity of the Cornia River and the Tyrrhenian Sea, confers uniqueness in the traits and characteristics of the wines obtained there.

In a foothill position, on a clayey soil composed of a rich variety of mineral microelements, we cultivate Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot by spurred cordon. The planting density is about 3,500 vines per hectare, with an average production of about 3,000 bottles per year.

The vineyards at Palazzotto

The conformation of the hill and its slopes forms a characteristic amphitheatre, in which we have identified four vineyards, planted on three hectares in 2015 and 2017.

To the south of the wood is the main vine, Sangiovese, which is able to express all its potential in these soils of the Tuscan coast; a variety capable of producing great wines in its areas of origin.

With respect for nature, history and the territory in which it grows, we have also chosen to cultivate an indigenous vine with great potential, Pugnitello.

A third vineyard to the north of the wood is home to Petit Verdot, a vine that has proved particularly suited to the climate of the Tuscan Maremma.

Finally, in February 2019 we planted, on a soil rich in marl, half a hectare of Grenache vineyard, which is both vinified on its own and partly used, with Sangiovese and Petit Verdot, to produce Aurora, our rosé wine.

The vineyards at Gregana

Within the property, surrounded by a wooded area, we planted, on sandy soil, one hectare of Cabernet Franc in 2019 and the white grape varieties of Trebbiano, Procanico and Malvasia Bianca in 2020. The presence of the Cornia and Milia rivers guarantees us a high temperature range between day and night, which gives freshness and flavour to our wines.
